Proposed Law Restructures Real Estate Authority in Benito Juárez

The mayor of Benito Juárez, Luis Mendoza, announced this week the presentation of a bill to modify the powers of the districts regarding real estate development in Mexico City. The goal is for the central government of CDMX to take full responsibility for the authorization and supervision of constructions in the capital.

Currently, the mayorships have eight powers related to buildings requested by individuals or private companies in their respective districts. The mayor stressed the importance of ensuring that all real estate development occurs within the legal framework, and also mentioned the implementation of new penalties against illegal tree cutting.

Next Thursday, the proposed law will be presented, which aims to transfer these powers to the central government, preventing the districts from being detached from the works and exempt from responsibilities in cases of complaints or problems arising during construction.

Mendoza clarified that the intention is not to evade responsibilities but to collaborate in the oversight and supervision of constructions, maintaining the quality of life for the residents of Benito Juárez. Additionally, a website will be launched where citizens can track the progress of constructions in real time and make inquiries, complaints, or reports if necessary.

These measures seek to distance the mayor's office of Benito Juárez from the accusations related to the so-called "real estate cartel," which have been labeled as fictitious by the local administration. Among the proposed modifications is the possibility of vetoing any property that commits crimes during construction for up to five years, preventing the construction of housing or other types of businesses.
